VM error: Out of memory

I just downloaded and started the SSA 7.3 VM using VM Workstation. I can get logged into Pega Platform. However, if I try to do anything, it doesn't respond and shortly after that the VM console reports:

Out of memory: Kill process 1628 (java)

The VM is configured for 6 GB.

How do I resolve this?
